Favor Fridays with Tony: The Favor of Legacy – Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future

ree

Welcome to another Favor Fridays with Tony! Today marks the 28th and final day of Black History Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the rich history, achievements, and contributions of Black leaders, visionaries, and trailblazers. As we close out this month of reflection, we turn our focus to legacy—how God’s favor allows us to honor those who came before us while paving the way for future generations.

The Power of Legacy in Faith and History

Legacy is more than what we leave behind—it is the impact we make while we are here. Proverbs 13:22 (The Message) reminds us:

“A good life gets passed on to the grandchildren; ill-gotten wealth ends up with good people.”

This verse highlights the importance of building a legacy that blesses future generations. God’s favor is not just for us; it extends to our families, our communities, and those who will walk in our footsteps.

The Economic Blackout and Its Connection to Legacy

Today, as we close out Black History Month, a nationwide Economic Blackout is taking place. This movement encourages Black individuals and allies to support Black-owned businesses, refrain from spending money with corporations that do not support Black communities, and invest in Black economic growth.

This economic action aligns with today’s theme of legacy—building long-term financial strength, supporting businesses that uplift the Black community, and ensuring that wealth and opportunities are passed down for generations. Just as historical leaders fought for civil rights, education, and justice, this blackout serves as a reminder that economic power is a crucial aspect of freedom and self-sufficiency.

Black leaders like Madam C.J. Walker, Booker T. Washington, and Marcus Garvey emphasized the importance of Black economic independence. Today’s blackout honors that legacy by promoting financial empowerment and intentional economic decisions.

Biblical Figures Who Left a Legacy of Faith

Throughout the Bible, we see powerful examples of individuals who built legacies that endured far beyond their lifetime.

1. Abraham – A Legacy of Faith (Genesis 12-25)

Abraham’s unwavering faith established him as the father of many nations. Through his trust in God’s promises, he laid the foundation for the Israelite people and, ultimately, the lineage of Jesus Christ. His legacy teaches us that faith in God’s plan creates generational blessings.

2. Moses – A Legacy of Leadership (Exodus 2-34)

Moses led the Israelites out of slavery, guiding them through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. His courage and obedience to God’s commands ensured that future generations would walk in freedom.

3. Esther – A Legacy of Courage (Esther 4-9)

Queen Esther risked her life to save her people, demonstrating that standing for what is right can change the course of history. Her legacy inspires us to be bold in our faith and advocate for justice.

Black Leaders Who Built a Legacy of Strength and Change

Just as biblical figures left an enduring impact, so have countless Black leaders whose faith, resilience, and perseverance shaped history. As we reflect on Black History Month, we honor the legacy of those who came before us.

1. Harriet Tubman – A Legacy of Freedom

Harriet Tubman’s unwavering faith led her to free enslaved individuals through the Underground Railroad. She famously said:

“I always told God, ‘I’m going to hold steady on You, and You’ve got to see me through.’”

Her legacy teaches us that faith and action go hand in hand.

2. Frederick Douglass – A Legacy of Education and Advocacy

Born into slavery, Frederick Douglass defied the odds by secretly teaching himself to read and write. His perseverance led him to escape slavery, become a leading abolitionist, and write one of the most powerful autobiographies in history. His words remind us of the power of endurance:

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”

3. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – A Legacy of Justice and Love

Dr. King’s message of nonviolence, faith, and equality transformed the Civil Rights Movement. His famous words from his "I Have a Dream" speech continue to echo today:

“The time is always right to do what is right.”

4. Madam C.J. Walker – A Legacy of Economic Empowerment

As the first self-made female millionaire in America, Madam C.J. Walker built a business empire while uplifting Black communities. She once said:

“I want to give the poor Black girl a chance.”

Her legacy teaches us to build businesses that uplift and empower others.

Walking in the Favor of Legacy Today

God calls each of us to leave a lasting impact. Here are some ways we can walk in the favor of legacy in our daily lives:

1. Invest in the Next Generation

Mentorship, teaching, and leading by example ensure that knowledge and wisdom continue to grow. Just as Moses mentored Joshua, we must invest in future leaders.

2. Build on a Foundation of Faith

Psalm 78:4 (The Message) says:

“We’re not keeping this to ourselves, we’re passing it along to the next generation—God’s fame and fortune, the marvelous things he has done.”

A strong legacy begins with faith. When we share God’s love and truth, we pass down blessings that endure.

3. Stand for Justice and Economic Empowerment

The leaders of Black history were not just successful—they fought for righteousness. Leaving a legacy means standing for what is right, whether in the workplace, in society, or within our communities. The Economic Blackout today is one example of taking meaningful action.

4. Live with Purpose and Integrity

A strong legacy isn’t about wealth or fame—it’s about character. Colossians 3:23 (The Message) reminds us:

“Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God.”

When we live with integrity, we create a legacy of excellence and faith.

Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future

As Black History Month comes to a close, we must carry the torch forward. The favor of legacy is about remembering those who paved the way while ensuring that the next generation has the tools, wisdom, and faith to continue the journey.

No matter where you are today, your life is building a legacy. What will you be remembered for? How will your faith, actions, and love shape those who come after you? God’s favor is upon you, and He has given you the opportunity to create a lasting impact.

Closing Thoughts: Your Legacy Begins Today

As we conclude Black History Month, let’s honor the past by living boldly in the present and preparing the way for the future. The favor of legacy is not just about looking back—it’s about moving forward with faith and purpose.

This week, ask yourself: What legacy am I building? How am I using my faith, gifts, and opportunities to empower others?
