Welcome to another Favor Fridays with Tony! Today is the 15th day of Women's History Month, a time when we reflect on the incredible contributions of women in shaping history, society, and, most importantly, families. Women are the pillars of faith, strength, and love in families, carrying the weight of generations while paving the way for the future.
Women have long played a divine and essential role in families, from biblical times to today. Their influence extends beyond nurturing to leadership, wisdom, and perseverance, and their favor from God allows them to be both protectors and visionaries. God’s favor on women in families is one of the most powerful blessings that has shaped faith, culture, and legacy throughout history.
The Favor of Women in Families Through Scripture
The Bible is filled with strong women of faith who shaped families, communities, and nations. Their stories remind us that God has uniquely positioned women to carry out His purpose through their influence, wisdom, and love.
1. Eve – The First Mother and the Beginning of Family (Genesis 2-4)
Eve, as the first woman, set the foundation for the role of women in families. While her story is often told through the lens of the fall, her legacy is also one of motherhood and the continuation of humanity. She was given the ability to bear life, a favor that God grants to women as the caretakers of future generations.
2. Sarah – A Legacy of Faith and Promise (Genesis 17-21)
Sarah, the wife of Abraham, was favored by God to be the mother of nations, despite facing years of barrenness. Her story teaches us that women in families carry the promise of faith, even when situations seem impossible. God’s favor on her life reminds us that women in families birth not only children but also legacies of faith and strength.
3. Naomi and Ruth – The Power of Mentorship and Loyalty (Ruth 1-4)
Naomi and Ruth’s story is a testament to the deep bond between women in families. Naomi, a mother-in-law, guided Ruth with wisdom and mentorship, showing that family is not just about blood but about connection, love, and spiritual guidance. Ruth’s loyalty and obedience led to her being grafted into the lineage of Jesus Christ, proving that the favor of women in families can lead to great blessings for generations to come.
4. Mary – The Mother Who Carried the Savior (Luke 1-2)
Mary, the mother of Jesus, was chosen and highly favored to carry and raise the Son of God. Her obedience, humility, and faith remind us that women in families play a divine role in shaping the spiritual future of their children. Mary’s story shows us that being a mother or a guiding woman in a family is a calling from God that requires faith, sacrifice, and strength.
Black Women in History Who Strengthened Families and Communities
As we celebrate Women's History Month, we must also recognize the Black women who used their favor, faith, and strength to hold families together and change communities. Their resilience ensured the survival and growth of generations, making them true pillars of family legacy.
1. Harriet Tubman – A Protector of Families
Harriet Tubman, known as the “Moses of her people,” risked her life countless times to free enslaved individuals, many of whom were families she reunited. Her bravery reminds us that women in families often stand as protectors, ensuring the survival and well-being of their loved ones.
2. Fannie Lou Hamer – A Fighter for the Rights of Black Families
Fannie Lou Hamer fought for voting rights, understanding that true freedom meant giving families the power to shape their futures. She famously said, “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired,” showing her determination to create a better future for generations to come.
3. Mary McLeod Bethune – An Educator Who Built Family Legacies
Mary McLeod Bethune believed that education was the key to lifting Black families out of poverty. She founded Bethune-Cookman University and served as an advisor to U.S. presidents, ensuring that young Black men and women had access to opportunities that would uplift their families.
4. Michelle Obama – A Modern Icon of Family Strength
Michelle Obama has been an advocate for family wellness, education, and women’s empowerment. She has shown that strong families create strong communities and has used her influence to encourage healthy relationships, education, and self-worth among women and girls worldwide.
The Favor of Women in Families Today
God’s favor is still upon women in families today. Whether as mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, or mentors, women continue to shape the next generation with love, wisdom, and strength. Here’s how women can continue walking in God’s favor in their families:
1. Nurturing Faith at Home
Women play a vital role in passing down faith and values. Proverbs 22:6 (The Message) reminds us:
“Point your kids in the right direction—when they’re old they won’t be lost.”
A woman’s influence in a family extends beyond physical care—she is often the spiritual backbone, ensuring that faith remains strong for generations.
2. Leading with Strength and Wisdom
Proverbs 31 describes a woman of strength, wisdom, and dignity. Women in families are leaders, whether managing a household, guiding children, or supporting loved ones. God’s favor allows women to walk in both tenderness and power.
3. Building Generational Wealth and Stability
Women are increasingly taking leadership in financial stability and generational wealth, ensuring their families have a firm foundation. Whether through entrepreneurship, homeownership, or financial planning, women are making a lasting impact on their family’s future.
4. Strengthening Relationships and Emotional Well-being
Women are often the heart of the family, bringing people together through love, connection, and encouragement. Their favor allows them to build healthy relationships, ensuring strong marriages, supportive sibling bonds, and deep-rooted friendships.
