Tony’s Soldiers of Light Sundays™: Your Character Must Be Strong Enough to Carry Your Calling- Why God Builds the Person Before He Releases the Assignment

A calling can be powerful, but if the character carrying it is weak, the calling can become too heavy to manage. Many people want open doors, greater influence, bigger platforms, deeper relationships, public success, spiritual authority and visible impact, but they do not always want the hidden work required to sustain what they are asking God to release.
That is why God does not only develop gifts. He develops people.
A gift can put you in a room, but character determines how you behave once you get there. A talent can attract attention, but humility determines whether attention changes you. A calling can place responsibility on your life, but discipline determines whether you can carry that responsibility without collapsing under pressure, pride, temptation or discouragement.
Proverbs 18:16 says, “A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men” (NKJV). That Scripture is powerful because it reminds us that gifts can create access. But access is not the same thing as readiness. Being invited into a room does not mean your character is prepared for everything in that room. Being gifted does not automatically mean you are mature. Being chosen does not mean there is no more growth required.
Some people are asking God to enlarge their territory, but God is trying to enlarge their capacity. Some are praying for elevation, but God is working on their foundation. Some are asking for visibility, but God is still healing the hidden places that visibility could expose. That is not punishment. That is preparation.
Because what God gives you must be strong enough to survive what comes with it.
Calling Without Character Can Become Dangerous
There is a reason character matters so much. A person can have ability and still lack integrity. A person can be talented and still be emotionally reckless. A person can be charismatic and still be spiritually immature. A person can speak powerfully in public and still be broken, prideful, dishonest or unstable in private.
That is why calling alone is not enough. If your gift grows faster than your character, the gift may carry you into places your character cannot sustain. If your platform grows faster than your humility, attention may begin to poison your heart. If your influence grows faster than your discipline, the very thing you prayed for may become a place of pressure, temptation and exposure.
First Corinthians 13:2 says, “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge… but have not love, I am nothing” (NKJV). That verse is a serious reminder that spiritual gifts do not replace spiritual maturity. You can know deep things and still need love. You can have powerful insight and still need patience. You can carry a calling and still need humility, kindness, self-control and wisdom.
God cares about what you do, but He also cares about who you are becoming while you do it.
God Often Builds Character in Hidden Places
Many people want the public part of purpose before they have completed the private part of preparation. But God often does some of His deepest work in places where nobody is clapping, nobody is watching and nobody is impressed. Hidden seasons can feel frustrating because they do not always look productive from the outside, but they are often where God strengthens what the world cannot see.
David was anointed to be king, but he still had to spend time in the field. Joseph had dreams of leadership, but he still had to walk through betrayal, slavery, false accusation and prison. Moses had a deliverer’s assignment, but he spent years in the wilderness before standing before Pharaoh. Even Jesus spent years in hidden preparation before His public ministry began.
Hidden does not mean forgotten. Hidden can mean being formed.
Luke 16:10 says, “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much” (NKJV). That means the small places matter. The quiet assignments matter. The moments when nobody sees your obedience matter. The private decisions matter. The way you handle correction, disappointment, delay and responsibility when there is no audience matters.
God uses hidden seasons to reveal what is inside us, heal what is broken in us and strengthen what will be needed later. If you cannot be faithful when the assignment feels small, you may not be ready to carry it when the weight becomes larger.
The Enemy Attacks Character Because Character Protects Purpose
The enemy understands something many people overlook: if he cannot stop your calling, he will try to corrupt your character. He knows that a person with an unhealed heart, unchecked pride, poor discipline, loose boundaries and no accountability can become vulnerable to self-destruction even while carrying real purpose.
That is why spiritual warfare is not only about outside attacks. Sometimes the battle is in your attitude. Sometimes the battle is in your motives. Sometimes the battle is in your temper, your ego, your secret habits, your inability to apologize or your refusal to listen when God is correcting you.
Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (NKJV). Pride is dangerous because it convinces people they are above correction. It makes them believe their gift excuses their behavior. It makes them mistake confidence for arrogance and authority for control. Pride can make a person defend what God is trying to expose.
A Soldier of Light Against Darkness™ cannot afford to protect pride while fighting darkness. The enemy does not always need to defeat you with something outside of you. Sometimes he only needs you to ignore what God is trying to change inside of you.
Correction Is Not Rejection
One of the clearest signs of growing character is the ability to receive correction without treating it as an attack. Many people say they want to grow, but they resist the very conversations, conviction and accountability that growth requires. They want affirmation without correction, elevation without pruning and maturity without discomfort.
But God corrects what He loves.
Hebrews 12:11 says, “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness…” (NKJV). Correction does not always feel good in the moment, but it can produce fruit that comfort never could. It can save you from patterns that would have damaged your future. It can expose blind spots before they become public failures. It can help you become strong enough to carry what God wants to entrust to you.
Correction is not proof that God is finished with you. Often, it is proof that He is still forming you.
If God is dealing with your attitude, your discipline, your relationships, your priorities, your speech or your private life, do not run from that work. Lean into it. Let Him correct what would eventually cost you peace, credibility, influence or spiritual strength.
Your Private Life Is Part of Your Calling
Many people separate public purpose from private character, but God does not. Who you are when nobody sees you matters. What you feed your mind matters. How you treat people who cannot benefit you matters. How you handle disappointment matters. How you respond when you are offended matters. How you steward your body, time, words, finances and relationships matters.
Private life is not separate from spiritual life.
It is part of the foundation.
Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (NKJV). That prayer is powerful because David was not asking God for more attention, more influence or more applause. He was asking God for a clean heart and a steady spirit. That is what many people need before the next door opens. Not more opportunity. More inner alignment.
A clean heart protects your motives. A steadfast spirit keeps you from being easily moved by praise, criticism, delay or temptation. A renewed spirit helps you obey God without needing to perform for people. These are not small things. These are the things that keep your calling from crushing you.
You Cannot Carry Kingdom Purpose With Carnal Patterns
God can call imperfect people. That is good news because every person He uses is still growing. But being imperfect is not an excuse to stay unchanged. Grace does not give us permission to keep feeding the same patterns that God is trying to deliver us from. Mercy is not a license to remain immature.
There are things that may have followed you for years that cannot go with you into the next level of obedience. Old mindsets. Old reactions. Old excuses. Old relationships. Old habits. Old wounds that keep speaking louder than God’s truth. If you keep carrying what God told you to surrender, you may find yourself weighed down in a season that requires freedom.
Second Timothy 2:21 says, “Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master…” (NKJV). That verse reminds us that usefulness is connected to surrender. God is not just trying to make us visible. He is trying to make us vessels fit for His purpose.
A vessel is not valuable because it is loud. It is valuable because it can carry what has been placed inside it without leaking, cracking or contaminating what it holds.
Maturity Means You Stop Blaming Everything on the Battle
Spiritual warfare is real, but not every problem is the devil. Sometimes the issue is a lack of discipline. Sometimes the issue is poor choices. Sometimes the issue is pride. Sometimes the issue is refusing wise counsel. Sometimes the issue is emotional immaturity. Sometimes the issue is wanting God to bless what we refuse to change.
That truth may be uncomfortable, but it is also freeing.
When we take responsibility, we take back the power to grow. We stop blaming every repeated cycle on outside forces and start asking God what needs to be healed, corrected, strengthened or surrendered inside us. That kind of honesty is not weakness. It is spiritual maturity.
James 1:22 says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (NKJV). It is not enough to hear truth, repost truth, quote truth or admire truth. At some point, truth must be lived. Character grows when we stop merely agreeing with God’s Word and start allowing it to reshape our actions.
A Soldier of Light Against Darkness™ must be willing to fight darkness externally while also surrendering to God internally. We cannot confront darkness around us while ignoring what God is trying to heal within us.
The Soldier’s Reality: Power Requires Preparation
This connects directly to S.O.L.A.D.™: Soldiers of Light Against Darkness™ because power without preparation can become dangerous. Kevin Edwards and Juanita Grayson did not become Angelo™ and Angeline™ simply by receiving ability. They had to grow into responsibility. They had to learn courage, trust, sacrifice, discipline and the cost of carrying a calling that was bigger than personal comfort.
Their assignment demanded more than strength. It demanded character.
That is the truth about every meaningful calling. God does not only ask, “Can you do this?” He also forms you until you can carry it with humility, wisdom and endurance. He shapes the heart behind the hands. He strengthens the spirit behind the gift. He develops the person behind the platform.
Being called does not mean you get to skip preparation. It means preparation matters even more.
Signs God May Be Strengthening Your Character
Sometimes character development does not feel spiritual while it is happening. It may feel like frustration, waiting, correction, discomfort or repeated opportunities to respond differently than you used to. But many times, those very moments are where God is building the maturity your future will require.
God may be strengthening your character when:
you are being challenged to apologize instead of defend yourself
you are learning to stay faithful without public recognition
you are being asked to forgive without returning to unhealthy access
you are becoming more disciplined with your time, words and choices
you are being corrected in an area you thought was already mature
you are learning to obey God even when your feelings disagree
you are being forced to confront patterns you once excused
you are learning that humility is stronger than pride
you are discovering that hidden obedience still matters to God
you are becoming more concerned with being faithful than being seen
Those moments are not meaningless. They are training ground. They are evidence that God is not only preparing the blessing for you, but He is preparing you for the blessing.
A Word for Right Now
If you have been asking God for more, do not be surprised if He starts dealing with the parts of you that must grow before more comes. More influence requires more humility. More responsibility requires more discipline. More authority requires more surrender. More visibility requires more inner stability.
Do not despise the season where God is building your character.
It may not feel glamorous. It may not get applause. It may not look like progress to other people. But if God is strengthening your foundation, healing your motives, correcting your patterns and teaching you how to carry responsibility with wisdom, that is sacred work.
Your calling matters too much for your character to stay weak. Let God build you before He releases you into what is next.
A Declaration for Today
I will not ask God for a greater calling while refusing the character required to carry it.
I will allow Him to strengthen my heart, correct my motives, discipline my habits and shape me into a vessel He can trust.
I will not let pride, fear, immaturity or hidden compromise weaken what God is building in my life.
I am a Soldier of Light Against Darkness™, and
I will grow in integrity, humility, wisdom and obedience so I can carry my assignment well.
A Prayer for Stronger Character
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the calling, gifts and purpose You have placed in my life. Help me become strong enough in character to carry what You have assigned to me. Search my heart, correct my motives and heal the places where pride, fear, insecurity or immaturity have tried to take root. Teach me to receive correction with humility, obey You in hidden places and grow in discipline, integrity and wisdom. Prepare me not only for open doors, but for the responsibility that comes with them. Make me a vessel You can trust.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
