Tony's Superhero Saturdays: Deborah Fields a.k.a Debrii

When the Marvel Universe needed a voice that was unapologetically sharp, witty, and unafraid to call out injustice, Deborah Fields — better known as Debrii — answered that call.

She may not lift mountains, fly at supersonic speeds, or command thunder. But Debrii’s power lies in her mind, her mouth, her courage, and her refusal to stay silent — even when the cost is high.

Today, on the 26th day of International Black Women’s History Month, we celebrate Debrii: a trailblazer of truth, a challenger of corruption, and a powerful symbol of the everyday Black woman’s fight to be seen, heard, and respected.

📝 Creation and Debut

  • First Appearance: New Warriors Vol. 3 #4 (2005)

  • Created by: Zeb Wells and Skottie Young

Introduced during Marvel’s early-2000s push to diversify their superhero teams, Debrii was added to the New Warriors specifically to disrupt the group’s carefully crafted public image. She wasn’t created to play nice — she was created to stir the pot and spark the revolution.

🌍 Debrii’s Origin Story

Deborah Fields was born and raised in a harsh world — one that often ignored the needs and struggles of people like her.

Her powers emerged as a form of telekinetic control over debris, allowing her to manipulate small objects, hurl junk at enemies, and defend herself creatively.

✅ She doesn’t have cosmic might — but she outsmarts and outmaneuvers with precision and grit.

When she joined the New Warriors, it wasn’t because she sought fame or approval. It was because she knew heroes needed to stand for more than ratings.

She quickly became the most outspoken member of the team, frequently clashing with teammates, producers, and systems that prioritized spectacle over substance.

💥 Powers and Abilities

Debrii's powers might seem modest compared to heavy-hitters like Thor or the Hulk, but in the hands of someone as sharp as Deborah Fields, they become formidable:

  • Debris Telekinesis – Control over rubble, trash, small objects, and metal scraps

  • Telekinetic Shielding – Can create barriers of swirling debris to block attacks

  • Creative Combatant – Uses surroundings to her advantage, turning weakness into strength

  • Sharp Intelligence – Quick-thinking strategist and improviser in chaotic battles

  • Outspoken Courage – Her mouth can sometimes be sharper than her abilities — and that’s saying something

✅ Debrii's real superpower is her audacity to demand better — for herself, her teammates, and the people superheroes claim to protect.

🗣️ Debrii and the Power of Speaking Out

Debrii represents the kind of hero who doesn’t fit easily into "good girl" molds. She is:

  • Bold

  • Critical

  • Sharp-tongued

  • Witty

  • Honest

She’s not interested in being polite for comfort. She’s interested in being truthful for progress.

In many ways, Debrii embodies the legacy of countless Black women throughout history who spoke uncomfortable truths even when it cost them reputation, security, or opportunity.

She reminds readers that disruption is sometimes necessary for change.

📚 Major Storylines and Evolution

🔹 New Warriors (2005–2006)

Debrii was added to the Warriors at the request of the show’s producers (the New Warriors were, at the time, a reality TV superhero team). She instantly shook up the team's image, pushing back against commercialization and "token diversity."

She called out the team's hypocrisy and often questioned their motives, which made her a polarizing but necessary voice.

🔹 Civil War (2006–2007)

When the Stamford incident ignited the Marvel Civil War storyline (the explosion that killed hundreds of civilians during a New Warriors battle), Debrii was one of the few Warriors who survived the public backlash.

Targeted by supervillains, hunted by the government, and betrayed by the system she tried to reform, Debrii kept fighting — joining Captain America's Secret Avengers, even after suffering deeply personal losses.

✅ She didn’t bow.

✅ She didn’t break.

✅ She became a symbol of resistance.

🔹 The Initiative and Beyond

Later, Debrii joined The Initiative and served as a superhero trainer — mentoring new heroes while continuing to critique the failures of superhero institutions.

In alternate universes and fan-favorite spin-offs like Marvel Divas and Fearless Defenders, Debrii's sass and spark continued to shine, even if she never became a household name.

💬 Quotes That Capture Debrii’s Spirit

“Maybe you want a mascot you can parade around for ratings. But I’m here to be a hero — not a stereotype.”

“The truth’s ugly sometimes. Deal with it.”

“I don't need to be your favorite. I need to be effective.”

🤎 Why Debrii Matters Today

Debrii stands tall as a symbol for:

Black women who refuse to stay silent

People who demand better from broken systems

Survivors who rise when the world tries to silence them

Everyday heroes who use their voice even when it's inconvenient

She represents the Black women who:

  • Challenge injustice at protests and town halls

  • Speak up in boardrooms and classrooms

  • Refuse to apologize for their intellect, anger, or demands

Debrii reminds us that you don’t have to move mountains to change the world. Sometimes, moving the rubble is the real victory.
