Favor Fridays with Tony™: The Favor of Still Becoming— Reflecting on God’s Grace on the Eve of My 44th Birthday

There is something sacred about the night before a birthday.

It is not just another evening. It is a quiet doorway between what has been and what is still becoming. It is a moment where memories, gratitude, lessons, prayers, regrets, victories and hopes all seem to gather in the same room. You start thinking about where you’ve been, what you’ve survived, what you’ve learned and what God has carried you through.

On the eve of my 44th birthday, I find myself reflecting on one simple truth:

I am still here.

That may not sound dramatic to everyone, but anyone who has lived long enough knows that “still here” is a testimony. Still here after the storms. Still here after the disappointments. Still here after the losses. Still here after the setbacks. Still here after moments when life did not go according to plan. Still here after prayers that were answered quickly, prayers that were answered differently and prayers that are still waiting on God’s timing.

To reach another birthday is not just about age. It is about grace. It is about mercy. It is about God allowing you to keep breathing, keep growing, keep learning, keep loving, keep serving and keep becoming. Every year is not just a number added to your life. It is evidence that God is still writing.

And if God is still writing, then the story is not over.

The Favor of Looking Back With Gratitude

When you stand on the edge of a new year of life, one of the healthiest things you can do is look back—not to get stuck in the past, but to recognize the hand of God in it.

Sometimes we are so focused on what we still want God to do that we forget to thank Him for what He has already done. We forget the doors He opened, the dangers He blocked, the people He sent, the lessons He taught, the strength He gave and the times He made a way when we could not see one.

Psalm 103:2 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”

That scripture is a reminder that gratitude requires memory. You have to intentionally remember. You have to look back and say, “God, You kept me there. You carried me through that. You protected me from this. You healed me in ways I didn’t even know I needed healing. You were faithful when I was tired, confused, discouraged or unsure.”

The older I get, the more I realize that some of God’s greatest favors were not the things I celebrated right away. Some of His greatest favors were delays I did not understand. Closed doors I did not like. Corrections I did not ask for. Seasons that humbled me. Moments that forced me to grow. People He moved out of my life. People He placed in my life. Opportunities that stretched me beyond what I thought I could handle.

Looking back with gratitude helps you realize that God was working even when life felt messy. He was present in the mountain moments. He was present in the valley moments. He was present when I felt strong. He was present when I was trying to figure out how to keep going.

That is favor.

The Favor of Surviving What Tried to Stop You

By the time you reach 44, you understand that life is not just about dreams, goals and birthdays. It is also about survival.

You survive things that people may never fully know about. You survive emotional battles. You survive disappointments that changed you. You survive grief. You survive seasons of uncertainty. You survive times when you had to encourage yourself because nobody fully understood what you were carrying.

And yet, by the grace of God, you are still standing.

Isaiah 43:2 says, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.” Notice that God does not say if you pass through the waters. He says when. That means life will bring waters. Life will bring rivers. Life will bring fire. But the promise is not that we will avoid every hard place. The promise is that God will be with us in it.

That matters.

Because there have been moments in life where the only explanation for still standing is God. Not willpower alone. Not intelligence alone. Not talent alone. Not connections alone. God.

The favor of reaching another birthday is not just that another year has passed. It is that everything assigned to destroy you failed. Everything meant to make you quit did not win. Every season that tried to convince you that your best days were behind you was wrong.

You are still here. Still breathing. Still believing. Still becoming.

The Favor of Becoming Wiser

One blessing of getting older is that if you are paying attention, you do not just gain years—you gain wisdom.

You learn that peace is valuable. You learn that not everything deserves a response. You learn that every open door is not a God door. You learn that everybody cannot go with you into every season. You learn that growth sometimes requires separation. You learn that being busy is not the same as being fruitful.

You also learn that life is too short to waste on bitterness, comparison, fear and trying to prove yourself to people who are committed to misunderstanding you.

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach.”

Wisdom is favor because it helps you live differently. It helps you choose better. It helps you pause before reacting, pray before deciding and discern before connecting. Wisdom teaches you that every lesson does not have to be learned the hard way, but if you did learn it the hard way, you can still grow from it.

At 44, I do not want to just be older. I want to be wiser. I want to be more disciplined, more discerning, more prayerful, more focused, more faithful and more aligned with what God has called me to do. I want the lessons of the past to produce better decisions in the future. I want the growth God has worked in me to show up in how I love, how I serve, how I create, how I lead and how I respond.

Because age without wisdom is just time passing. But age with wisdom is favor maturing.

The Favor of Purpose Still Calling

One of the greatest blessings in life is realizing that purpose does not expire just because another birthday arrives.

Sometimes people treat birthdays like deadlines. They start measuring themselves against what they thought life would look like by a certain age. They think about what they have not accomplished, what has not happened yet, what took longer than expected or what still feels unfinished.

But God does not operate according to insecurity’s timeline.

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

That scripture is not just comforting; it is stabilizing. It reminds us that God’s plans are not canceled by delay. They are not ruined by mistakes. They are not intimidated by age. They are not limited by what people think should have happened by now.

On the eve of my 44th birthday, I am reminded that purpose is still calling. There are still words to write. There are still stories to tell. There are still people to encourage. There are still prayers to pray. There are still books to publish. There are still dreams to pursue. There are still platforms to build. There are still lives to impact.

The favor of God is not just that He gave me purpose. It is that He keeps reminding me that I am not finished.

The Favor of Dreams That Refuse to Die

There is something powerful about a dream that survives real life.

Anybody can dream when things are easy. Anybody can be excited when the path is smooth, support is loud and progress is obvious. But when a dream continues to burn after delays, setbacks, discouragement and long seasons of waiting, that is something different.

That is not just ambition. That is calling.

Habakkuk 2:3 says, “For the vision is yet for an appointed time… though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come.”

That verse has carried many dreamers through quiet seasons. It reminds us that delay does not mean denial. It reminds us that vision has timing. It reminds us that just because something has not happened yet does not mean God has forgotten.

As I step toward 44, I think about the dreams God placed in me years ago. Dreams connected to writing. Storytelling. Ministry. Media. Superheroes. Faith. Creativity. Encouragement. Legacy. Dreams connected to S.O.L.A.D.™: Soldiers of Light Against Darkness™ and the belief that stories can entertain, inspire and point people toward light.

Some dreams take longer than expected. Some require more growth than we anticipated. Some demand a version of us we had to become through time, pressure, prayer and persistence. But if the dream is still alive, there is still favor on it.

The Favor of Not Being Who You Used to Be

A birthday is also a chance to thank God for growth. Not just public growth. Not just accomplishments people can see. But internal growth. The kind that happens quietly. The kind that changes how you think, how you respond, how you pray and how you see yourself.

There are things that would have shaken me years ago that do not shake me the same way now. There are things I would have reacted to differently that I can now handle with more wisdom. There are situations I used to chase that I now know how to release. There are rooms I used to want to be in that I now understand were not always assigned to me. That is growth.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

That does not mean growth happens all at once. Sometimes becoming new is a daily process. Sometimes God changes us layer by layer, season by season, test by test, prayer by prayer.

And when you look back and realize you do not think the same, react the same or carry certain things the same way anymore, you have to thank God.

Because becoming better is favor. Healing is favor. Maturity is favor. Deliverance is favor.

The Favor of People Who Helped Shape the Journey

No one reaches a new birthday alone.

Even when the journey feels personal, there are always people God used along the way. Parents. Family. Friends. Teachers. Mentors. Church members. Supporters. Readers. Encouragers. People who prayed. People who corrected. People who believed. People who showed up at the right time.

Some stayed for a lifetime. Some were only present for a season. But their impact mattered.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

I thank God for the people who sharpened me. The ones who encouraged my gifts. The ones who challenged my thinking. The ones who prayed for me when I needed covering. The ones who supported the work, purchased the books, shared the posts, read the articles, gave feedback, opened doors or simply reminded me not to quit.

Favor often comes through people.

And when you look at your life honestly, you can see how God used certain relationships to help shape who you became. That is worth remembering on the eve of a birthday. Because every life is a combination of grace, choices, lessons and relationships that helped form the person standing in the present.

The Favor of Time

Time is one of the most valuable gifts God gives us.

We often talk about money, opportunity and success, but time is something we cannot manufacture. We cannot rewind it. We cannot purchase more of it. We can only steward what we have been given.

Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

That verse hits differently before a birthday. It is not meant to make us afraid of time passing. It is meant to make us more intentional with the time we have. Numbering our days means recognizing that life is precious. It means understanding that tomorrow is not promised, so today should not be wasted.

As I prepare to turn 44, I do not want to simply exist through another year. I want to live it with intention. I want to use my time better. I want to love better. I want to create more boldly. I want to pursue purpose with greater focus. I want to stop delaying what God has already told me to do.

The favor of time is not just having more of it. It is learning how to honor it.

The Favor of Looking Ahead With Faith

Birthdays are reflective, but they are also prophetic in a sense. They invite you to look forward.

Not with fear. Not with anxiety. Not with regret. But with faith.

Philippians 3:13–14 says, “Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal.”

That is the posture I want to carry into 44. Grateful for what has been, but not trapped by it. Honest about the lessons, but not chained to the mistakes. Thankful for the victories, but still pressing toward what is ahead.

There is more ahead. More growth. More purpose. More discipline. More creativity. More impact. More obedience. More favor.

And I believe that because God has not brought me this far to stop here.

A Declaration for 44

  • I declare that this new year of life will be marked by wisdom, purpose, discipline, creativity and divine alignment.

  • I will not waste the time God has given me.

  • I will not shrink back from the assignments He has placed in my hands.

  • I will walk in gratitude for what He has already done and faith for what He is still doing.

  • I will grow where I need to grow, release what I need to release and pursue what God has called me to pursue.

  • I am still here by grace, still becoming by faith and still moving forward with purpose.

A Prayer on the Eve of My Birthday

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for another year of life. Thank You for keeping me, covering me, correcting me, strengthening me and guiding me. Thank You for every lesson, every blessing, every door, every delay, every person and every moment that helped shape me into who I am today.

As I step into 44, give me wisdom for the journey ahead. Give me discipline to steward my gifts well. Give me courage to pursue purpose boldly. Give me peace where I need rest, clarity where I need direction and strength where I need endurance. Help me honor the time You have given me and use my life in a way that glorifies You and encourages others.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Bigger Picture

The eve of a birthday is not just about getting older.

It is about recognizing grace. It is about looking back and saying, “God, You kept me.” It is about looking forward and saying, “God, I still trust You.” It is about understanding that every year is a gift, every lesson has purpose and every breath is another opportunity to become more of who God created you to be.

So as I prepare to turn 44, I do so with gratitude. Gratitude for what God has done. Gratitude for what He brought me through. Gratitude for what He is still building. Gratitude for purpose that still calls. Gratitude for dreams that still breathe. Gratitude for favor that still follows.

I am not finished. God is not finished. And the next chapter is just beginning.
