Reed's Reads of Wisdom Wednesdays™: Underestimating People Will Cost You

Introduction: The Danger of Looking at People the Wrong Way

One of the quickest ways to put yourself in a losing position is to misjudge the person standing in front of you. It happens every day—people are sized up, written off, underestimated, and dismissed based on what others think they see. Strength is often confused with size, presence is mistaken for power, and confidence is misread as capability.

But what if the person you overlook is the very one equipped to take you out?

In "Friends, Not Foes", Chapter 5 of Book II of Soldiers of Light Against Darkness™: It’s Just the Beginning, we witness a moment that perfectly captures this truth. A towering, intimidating enemy—Titan—steps forward with all the confidence in the world. He is big, loud, and physically imposing, and from his perspective, the outcome of the fight is already decided.

Then he makes a mistake.

He looks at Angeline… and underestimates her.

The Setup: Confidence Without Discernment Is Dangerous

Titan doesn’t just challenge the heroes—he mocks them. He questions Angelo’s strength for stepping back and allowing Angeline to fight. He reduces her to what he believes she is based on appearance alone. In his mind, she is weaker, less capable, and not worth taking seriously.

That’s where everything shifts.

Because confidence without discernment will always lead you into traps you didn’t see coming. Titan had power, yes—but he lacked awareness. He was so focused on what he believed to be true that he missed what was actually standing in front of him.

And in life, that’s how people lose.

They underestimate the quiet one in the room. They dismiss the person who doesn’t need to speak loudly. They overlook someone simply because they don’t “look the part.”

And by the time they realize their mistake… it’s too late.

The Moment: Strength Revealed in an Instant

What happens next in the chapter is not just action—it’s a statement. Angeline doesn’t argue. She doesn’t defend herself verbally. She lets her actions speak.

With one decisive move, she delivers a blow that sends Titan crashing backward, completely disrupting his confidence and control.

In that moment, everything changes.

The same opponent who was laughing seconds ago is now reacting. The same enemy who thought he had the upper hand is now trying to recover. The narrative flips—not because Titan got weaker, but because Angeline’s true strength was finally revealed.

And that’s how it works in real life.

You don’t always need to prove yourself ahead of time. You don’t always need to announce what you’re capable of.

Sometimes, your moment will do all the talking for you.

The Reality: People Judge What They Don’t Understand

The truth is, people tend to measure others using incomplete information. They look at surface-level traits and make deep-level assumptions. They see what’s visible and ignore what’s developed beneath the surface.

But strength isn’t always obvious.

Some people have been through things that built them in ways you can’t see. Some people carry discipline, resilience, and focus that isn’t flashy—but it’s effective. Some people don’t need to look powerful because they already know they are.

And when those people are underestimated?

That’s when they become dangerous.

The Lesson: Respect What You Don’t Fully See

This chapter teaches us that underestimation isn’t just disrespectful—it’s costly. It blinds you to reality. It puts you in a position where you’re reacting instead of preparing. It causes you to approach situations casually that should be taken seriously.

Titan didn’t lose control because he lacked strength. He lost control because he lacked respect for what he didn’t understand.

And that same principle applies everywhere:

  • In leadership—when you overlook team members.

  • In relationships—when you take people for granted.

  • In business—when you ignore competitors or opportunities.

  • In life—when you assume someone isn’t capable of more.

Underestimation creates blind spots.

And blind spots create losses.

The Bible Has Already Said It

Scripture has warned us about this mindset long before we ever saw it play out in a battle scene.

1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)“For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

That right there is the foundation of this entire lesson. People judge what they see. God understands what’s within. And if you rely only on what you see, you will misjudge people every time.

Biblical Proof: God Specializes in Using the Overlooked

If we’re honest, this lesson isn’t new—it’s a pattern. Scripture shows us over and over again that people are often underestimated… and yet chosen, elevated, and used in powerful ways by God.

Take David, for example. When the prophet Samuel came to anoint the next king, David wasn’t even invited into the room. His own family overlooked him. They assumed leadership looked like his older brothers—taller, stronger, more “qualified.” But God had already made His decision. David, the shepherd boy left in the field, was the one chosen to lead a nation. What everyone else dismissed… God had already anointed.

Then there’s Joseph. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and thrown into prison—Joseph’s life looked like a series of setbacks. To anyone watching from the outside, he didn’t look like a leader. He looked like someone forgotten. But what they couldn’t see was that every season was preparing him for influence. The same man who was overlooked and discarded became the one who would save nations from famine. What others meant for harm… God used for purpose.

And we can’t forget Ruth. A Moabite woman, a widow, an outsider with no social standing or security. By every cultural standard, she was someone easy to overlook. Yet her loyalty, faith, and character positioned her for something far greater. Ruth became part of a lineage that would ultimately lead to Jesus Christ. The woman who could have been dismissed as insignificant became essential in God’s plan.

And that’s the point.

People may overlook you. They may misjudge you. They may underestimate what you carry.

But God doesn’t operate based on appearances—He operates based on purpose.

Real Life: This Happens More Than You Think

This isn’t just a moment in a story—it’s something we experience constantly.

It’s the employee who gets overlooked but ends up leading the project. It’s the student who isn’t taken seriously but excels when it counts. It’s the quiet person who doesn’t say much but delivers when it matters most. It’s the individual who’s been doubted, dismissed, and underestimated… and still rises.

And when they do?

Everyone suddenly sees what was there all along.

The Shift: Don’t Let Their Doubt Become Your Limitation

While this lesson warns against underestimating others, it also speaks to those who have been underestimated. Because if you’re not careful, you’ll internalize what others think about you and start limiting yourself before you even begin.

Angeline didn’t shrink to meet Titan’s expectations.

She rose above them.

And that’s the mindset you have to carry.

You don’t need validation to operate in your purpose. You don’t need approval to walk in your strength. You don’t need recognition to be effective.

All you need is alignment with who you are and what you’ve been called to do.

The S.O.L.A.D.™ Connection

Soldiers of Light Against Darkness™ consistently shows us that the battle isn’t always about who looks stronger—it’s about who actually is. The series reminds us that power, purpose, and identity don’t always show up in obvious ways.

And in this moment, Angeline proves that what you underestimate… can absolutely overcome you.

Final Thought: Look Again

The next time you’re tempted to size someone up too quickly, pause.

Look again. Think again. Respect what you don’t fully understand.

Because the person you overlook today…

Might be the one who changes everything tomorrow.
